But, according to a recent survey by BambooHR, the reality is that 40% of tech organisations adhere to a business professional dress code.
The survey of over 1,000 U.S.-based employees at small-to-medium tech organisations also revealed that 42% have a business casual dress code, and only 14% have casual dress codes.
It was also worth noting that 55% of respondents believed their dress code is exactly what it needs to be, and only 11% indicated theirs is too formal or restrictive.
That said, these dress codes aren't always followed. Among the HR respondents polled, 15% indicated their organisations don't enforce it while 16% reported their employees don't follow the dress code.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, nearly half (49%) said they feel it's more important for members of HR to follow the dress code as compared to other employees.
At the same time, 43% of HR professionals believed HR is primarily responsible for enforcing the company's official dress code. Another 35% felt it's upper management's responsibility and 22% thought it's the supervisor's responsibility.
